Wives and Daughters is beautifully written and Gaskell gave so much life to all of her characters, even the minor characters, which just makes the novel a joy to read. I can see why people think that because it truly was a fantastic book. Wives and Daughters was Gaskell’s last novel and it’s often considered her masterpiece. That makes this review very difficult to write because I don’t really have much to say about it other than ‘I loved this book’. I have previously read Mary Barton, North and South, and Cranford. Intertwined with the story of the Gibsons is that of Squire Hamley and his two sons as Molly grows up and falls in love she learns to judge people for what they are, not what they seem.Įlizabeth Gaskell (1810 – 1865) is best known for writing novels that critiqued Victorian society and the English class system. Her widowed father marries a second time to give Molly the woman’s presence he feels she lacks, but until the arrival of Cynthia, her dazzling step-sister, Molly finds her situation hard to accept. Summary: Molly Gibson is the daughter of the doctor in the small provincial town of Hollingford.
